My whipped cream buttercream frosting is incredible! It is so much better than regular American buttercream frosting or Swiss meringue buttercream. Light and fluffy deliciousness!

I am always fascinated by how creamy, light and fluffy this simple sugar-free frosting recipe really is. That’s right! This buttercream uses no sugar. You can use powdered sugar if you prefer, but I make mine a keto friendly buttercream.

With just 4 ingredients you can make this incredible keto buttercream. With only 1g net carbs per serve, you are going to love this sugar-free frosting.

Why we Love this recipe

It’s not too sweet – using mostly heavy whipping cream this no-butter frosting is super light, not too sweet and creamy more than “sugary”.

Quick and so easy – What I love most about this whipped buttercream frosting recipe is it is so simple.

Versatile – You can use this buttercream frosting recipe for all your favorite keto cakes.

Ingredients – Only 4 ingredients that you likely have in your pantry now.

The Ingredients

Just 4 simple ingredients are all you need to make this keto vanilla buttercream. You can of course add any additional ingredients to flavor it, but for this basic frosting, all you need is the following.

Whipping Cream – whipping cream, thickened cream, or heavy cream has many names. The cream you want to use is the whipping cream you would use for regular whipped cream.

Cream cheese – this adds a bit of the cream cheese frosting flavour and adds stability to the frosting. I use cold chilled cream cheese that has not been softened before whipping. This helps keep structure in a stabilised whipped cream frosting.

Powdered Sweetener – Sukrin Melis is my personal choice of powdered sweetener in this recipe. I find it has little cooling affect and doesn’t affect the flavor of the buttercream. Alternatively, you can make your own powdered sweetener if you cannot source any locally. For those of you not looking for a keto frosting you can use regular confectioners sugar for this recipe.

Vanilla Extract – vanilla extract is available in most supermarkets. Alternatively, use the seeds of half of a vanilla bean.

Food colouring – You can use any of your favourite gel food colouring (perfect for a keto layer cake like I have pictured). You can also use any extracts to flavour or use different chocolate to make chocolate buttercream frosting as well. The options are endless.

How to Make it

Frosting whipped in a mixer.

Step 1. Insert the wire whisk attachment to a stand mixer or hand mixer. Add the cream cheese, sweetener and vanilla to the bowl; mix until smooth.

Step 2. While the beaters are rotating gradually pour in the cream and mix until thick and smooth.

Step 3. Stir through any flavour, or colour. Pipe or spoon onto the cake to serve.

I have baked just a few keto dessert recipes over the years. Recipes like our No Bake Keto Cheesecake or Chocolate Cheesecake are both new and incredible. We have so many different desserts!

FAQs and Baking Tips

Can I freeze the frosting?

You absolutely can! Freeze on its own or on top of any keto cake. I always ensure anything I am freezing is completely airtight to avoid freezer burn. Defrost in the fridge overnight.

Can I use only regular sweetener in keto frosting?

If you do not have powdered sweetener or can source it locally you will need to mill it to make the sweetener finer. If you use a standard sweetener, it will be grainy and not so nice. To mill the sweetener in a Thermomix or similar simply mill 10 sec/speed 10 until a fine powder forms.

Use the coconut cream for a dairy free keto frosting. I chill cream overnight and scoop out only the thickest part for whipping.
Magimix Keto Frosting – For the keto buttercream frosting. I just set the Cook Expert to food processor 30 seconds and mix and scrape down the sides as needed until I have a fluffy buttercream.
Thermomix Keto Frosting – The buttercream can be whipped with the butterfly whisk attachment in place too. Please stop the mixer from time to time when making the frosting to scrape the sides down. Continue to mix until very light and fluffy.
Flavors – to flavor the frosting simply add any of your favorite extracts, zest, unsweetened cacao etc. and mix.
The buttercream may become firm in the fridge to soften simple leave at room temperature until it softens.
