What is Lebanese 7 Spice?

The Arabic word Baharat or Sabaa Baharat (which means spices) also knows Lebanese 7 Spice seasoning.

This fragrant and aromatic spice mixture adds an incredible flavour to Lebanese cuisine. It is perfect in beef or lamb kafta, Lebanese vegetarian dishes, or even in burgers on the grill. Try it in our incredibly good Beef Kafta recipe.

I am sure each Lebanese family has their own combination ratio for this 7 spice mix. You can use whole spices or ground spices just ensure you mill or grind it to a fine powder for use.

Black pepper – I use ground black pepper. Please note the amount of pepper used does not make this spice mix hot or “peppery”.

Allspice – comes from the Allspice tree. It is not a combination of spices like garam masala or Mixed Spice.

Cumin powder – you can use cumin seeds or ground cumin. If using seeds they will need to be blended to a powder or milled using a spice grinder before adding to the seven spices mix.

Coriander powder – ground coriander comes from the dried seeds pods of cilantro (coriander).

Cinnamon – do not skip the cinnamon. It adds so much to this Arabic seasoning. If you only have cinnamon quills then mill or grate to a powder.

Nutmeg – is available in ground powder or whole nutmeg. I used whole nutmeg and microplaned it into the mixture.

Cloves – ground cloves adds a delicious fragrant touch to this 7 spice seasoning.

You can store this for months in an airtight container in the pantry. I always just take notice of the best before dates of the spices I use.

Notes

INGREDIENTS FOR BAHARAT
All of the Lebanese seven spices are found in most pantries. Check the best before date before using. If you have some of the spices whole then use a spice grinder, blender, or food processor to mill them into the 7 spice powder.
HOW MUCH 7 SPICE POWDER TO USE
I use 1 tablespoon per 250g of ground meat (eg lamb or beef kofta). You can add more if you like. I find this a perfect ratio for protein.
Try the Baharat in some of my favourite meals like Beef Kafta or Fathead Sausage Rolls.
THERMOMIX BAHARAT
This recipe is so easy to whip up Lebanese 7 spice recipe with a Thermomix.
ACTIVATING SPICES
Do I need to dry fry the Lebanese spice mix first. No you don’t but if you would prefer to dry fry to release the aromatics before adding to ground meat for kofta then by all means do it as you use it.
STORAGE AND FREEZING
Store in an airtight container in the pantry. Spices can be frozen in vacuum sealed packets if you prefer.

This spice mix smells awesome. I just mixed up a batch and can’t wait to use it over our meats on the bbq and also over our vegetables. I had everything in my pantry to make it and it’s great to know you can make your own at home with no nastiest in it.
