So many taco seasonings are filled with sugar and fillers. This Keto Taco Seasoning is perfection! Simple, delicious and made with seasonings you probably already have kicking around in your pantry right now.

The original Keto Taco Seasoning recipe was published in August 2019. I have updated the images and information for the making of and use of this homemade taco seasoning.

Homemade Taco Seasoning

This seasoning mix is amazing! It is so easy and so much better than store bought. No nasties, no sugar and no fillers. What is so good about it is that you are likely to have all the ingredients in your pantry right now.

Make a super clean homemade keto taco with this seasoning mix. Use it in all your favourite Mexican keto recipes. We have some great low carb recipes you will love like Birria Tacos, Beef Keto Tacos, or Chili Con Carne as just a few low carb dinners I know you will love.

Why We Love This Recipe

Low carb – This seasoning has 1g net carbs per serve.

Gluten free – this is a gluten free taco seasoning recipe. This makes it perfect for coeliac too. Make your own keto fish tacos or keto quesadillas with our amazing Keto Tortillas or Keto Wraps. These both also double for amazing keto taco shells when baked (or fried).

Everyday ingredients – Made with everyday ingredients found in most herb and spice cupboards, and easily sourced from the supermarket.

Quick and easy – just mix it and use as needed.

The Ingredients

Scroll to the bottom of this post for the full list of taco seasoning ingredients and the amount of each required.

These are the ingredients I use. You can adjust the amounts if you prefer to have yours spicier or less spicy. The choice is yours. You will find this recipe keto friendly and so much better than those store bought taco seasoning packets available at the supermarket.

chilli powder – don’t be too concerned about the quantity in this recipe as it is not a seasoning recipe. A little goes a long way.

ground cumin – cumin goes so well in Mexican cuisine and flavouring taco meat.

paprika – sweet or smoked can be used.

salt flakes – I always use sea salt flakes. Do NOT use any salt flakes that have added iodine as it will make the seasoning bitter.

garlic powder – a little goes a long way. Garlic powder is a great addition to any seasoning.

onion powder – onion powder or onion salt can be used.

oregano – you can use regular or Mexican oregano

How to Make Low Carb Taco Seasoning

Step 1. Measure out all the ingredients into a bowl.

Step 2. Mix them together carefully until well combined!

To make your own Mexican spice in the Thermomix or Magimix just add all the ingredients at once and mix 5 sec/speed 3. (Make sure the hole in the lid is closed off with the cap!)

How to Use DIY Taco Seasoning

This is such a great taco spice recipe on any kind of protein. Whether it is slow cooked, pressure cooked, barbecued, smoked, grilled or fried. I love it on a smoked pork butt, or with any kind of Mexican carnitas.

Use in any of our Mexican recipes. This seasoning works well with everything from ground beef to seasoning for chicken tacos or vegetables.

Our Keto Taco Salad or even Keto Burgers are a great way to use this taco seasoning recipe too. Mix a little in guacamole or mix with sour cream for an amazingly easy topper for a keto Mexican casserole or keto pies.

Megan’s Tips

Does Taco Seasoning have carbs?

Yes. Store bought seasoning do have fillers and sugar. Be mindful that you read the ingredients if you wish to purchase from the supermarket.

How long does it last?

As long as you’re not using stale dried herbs and spices, this seasoning should keep for up to 3 months in the pantry.

STORAGE
Store in an airtight container in the pantry for up to 3 months. I recommend using within this time frame even though all the herbs and spices do have a much longer shelf life.
INGREDIENTS
All ingredients are available from the supermarket without any additives present in them.
SERVING SIZES
This recipe yields approximately 7 tablespoons. Each tablespoon of seasoning will make approximately 14+ servings. The actual number of servings will depend on your preferred portion sizes.
SERVING SIZE BY WEIGHT
To calculate the weight of one serving, prepare the recipe as instructed. Weigh the finished recipe, then divide the weight of the finished recipe by 14. The result will be the weight of one serving.
NUTRITIONAL VALUES
Nutritional values shown are guidelines only. They are for 0.5 tablespoon using the ingredients listed. So this can be halved, quartered or whatever depending on the dish the seasoning is added to. Actual macros may vary slightly depending on the brands and types of ingredients used.
The recipe card instructions contain the most basic of steps and a list of ingredients. If you have any queries, questions or are unsure of substitutions, please scroll up to the blog post for more information.
I use a 15ml tablespoon and 250ml cup for measures. You can use the calculator to convert ounces in a cup if needed. Please note that there is also a conversion from metric to US Customary button under the list of ingredients.

I am sorry. Never made my own Taco Seasoning before. You say to pour the seasoning into the skillet and toast it until fragrant. Are you saying before I store it into a jar to toast it or before I get ready to use it?
Traditionally when I used the store bought seasoning it has you use a 1/4 cup of seasoning with a 2/3 cup of Water for 1 pound of meat. I never “toasted” the seasoning for that before.
Can you please explain. Thank you.

So correct me if I’m wrong, but 1 tbsp has 4 carbs?

    1. Megan Mad Creations Hub

4 total carbs and 2 net carbs.

So by that measurement, it’s not that much lower than the packaged stuff. 3 tbsp of package has 15 carbs, 3 tbsp of this has 12.

It is without any sweeteners or anticaking agents, so it is better than store bought and also makes better use of any spices you may already have at home rather than buy another. Spice macros are not going to change whether mixed on the production line or at home, this is just a cleaner option.

This mix is “the bomb”!! I haven’t had any packets of that commercial crap in my pantry for a few years now (and I’m so sorry not to have left a review before, Megan). This has so much more flavour than purchased mixes AND I can control exactly how hot we want it. We love it! โค๏ธ

I think I’m missing something. How much seasoning for each pound of meat?

    1. Megan Mad Creations Hub

It would depend on the type of meal you are making.

Made this as hot and mild version – use hot for adults only and mild when we have grankids around. Could not be easier and tastier. Versatile recipe for all Mexican food. Fantastic!

Yay! So happy you are putting it to good use Nina.
