What is Sugar Free Sweet Chilli Sauce?

Sugar-free sweet chilli sauce is a variation of the “classic sweet chili sauce” that is made without using traditional sugar. Instead, it relies on sugar substitutes or natural sweeteners that have minimal impact on blood sugar levels. Common sugar-free sweeteners include erythritol, allulose, stevia, or monk fruit.

What You Will Love about this Recipe

  • Low in Carbohydrates – Traditional sweet chili sauce is high in sugar and carbs, making it unsuitable for low-carb or keto diets. A sugar-free version allows individuals on these diets to enjoy the sweet and spicy flavor without the added carbs.
  • Diabetic Friendly – For those managing diabetes or looking to stabilize blood sugar levels, a sugar-free option provides a tasty alternative without causing significant spikes in blood sugar.
  • Customizable – Making your own sugar-free sweet chili sauce at home allows you to tailor the sweetness and spice levels according to your preferences. You can experiment with different sugar substitutes and adjust the recipe to suit your taste.

Sugar Free Sweet Chilli Sauce Ingredients

Chillies – I use a mix of serrano, jalapeño, and Bishop’s Crown. If you do not want it to be spicy scrape out all the seeds and membranes from the chillies. Alternatively, you can use a tablespoon of chilli flakes for a milder sweet chilli sauce.

Sweetener – I use brown sweetener or allulose. I prefer allulose if it is available as it does not crystallise when it cools.

Garlic – add more garlic if you wish, but remember to add the carbs as well.

Vinegar – I use apple cider vinegar but you can just use regular white vinegar if that is all you have.

How To Make It

Step 1. In a food processor blend all sauce ingredients until finely chopped

Step 2. Pour into a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cover with a lid. Cook, stirring occasionally for 15-20 minutes or until sauce is thick and reduced. Pour into sterile jars, seal and cool. Store in fridge for up to 1 month.

Why Should You Make Your Own?

  1. Control Over Ingredients:
    • Making your own sugar-free sweet chili sauce gives you control over the quality of ingredients. You can choose high-quality sweeteners and fresh, organic produce for a healthier option.
  2. Avoiding Additives:
    • Commercial sweet chili sauces often contain additives, preservatives, and artificial flavors. Making it at home ensures a cleaner, more natural product.
  3. Tailor to Dietary Needs:
    • By making it yourself, you can easily adapt the recipe to suit specific dietary needs, such as gluten-free, vegan, or paleo, by choosing ingredients that align with those preferences.
  4. Experiment with Flavors:
    • Homemade sauces provide the opportunity to experiment with additional flavors and spices, creating a unique sauce that complements your favorite dishes.

You can. Use dried chilli flakes or seeded chillies. Make sure to remove the membrane too. Milder chillies like serranos or Bishops crowns are perfect for a mild sugar free chilli sauce.

Store it in the fridge for up to 1 month. It is always best to sterlise the jars before use. Also, when removing the sauce make sure that you do with a clean utensil and place the jar back into the fridge to keep it fresh.

  3. Paul

Hi it’s a very nice flavour I used stevia sweetener and sea salt but couldn’t get the mixture to thicken was like water any ideas how to make it a thicker sauce many thanks paul

    1. Megan Mad Creations Hub

At a guess it was the choice of sweetener used. If you still have it in the fridge pop it back in a pan and continue to cook on low until it reduces and thickens.

Just made a double batch of this insanely good Sweet Chilli Sauce as we go through heaps here. Kicking myself that I haven’t made it sooner (it’s been on my to do list FOREVER). Thanks Megan for a fantastic easy recipe.

You are very welcome Paul. I hope you are well xx

  5. Robert

I have made this using Natvia instead of Sukrin. The sauce has set hard, looks like creamed honey… What would cause this?? Is it the sweetener I used or something else? Thanks

    1. Megan Mad Creations Hub

Hi Robert, if that was the only difference you made then maybe. That sounds really weird. If you heat it a little does it go back to a sauce consistency?

  6. Suzi Delpopolo

Hi I love the taste of this sweet chilli sauce, I’m just wondering why my Erythritol has re crystallised into chunks of sweetener on cooling and how to avoid this? It was great while warm but at room temp it now has chunks of sweetener. I’m in Australia and don’t have access to Sukrin yet but it’s mostly erithritol anyway right?

    1. Megan Mad Creations Hub

Hi Suzi, I am an Aussie too and Sukrin is available through the links online within Aus. I use powdered erythritol but unfortunately all keto sweeteners can recrystallise. Just give it is a little warmth from the microwave or in a pan and it will liquidise again.

  7. Laura

Is it 1 x 5cm piece of ginger or 1 x 15cm piece of ginger

    1. Megan

      1 x 5cm piece thanks Laura

Please can you check measurement re Metric ‘cups’ to US cups. I dont understand how 1 metric cup for both Sukrin Gold and vinegar can be equivalent to 0.5 US cup and 0.25 US cup ? Thanks

    1. Megan

I will have to look at the plugin as it is automatically calculated. I believe a US cup is smaller than a metric cup but only by 20g

I love the nice bit of heat but also that it’s sugar free. We had it with some philly cheese and seasoned crackers.
Whole family loves this one and I love a quick delicious flavour paced sauce.
Thanks Megan for another great recipe
