Just 3 simple ingredients are all you need to make this keto vanilla buttercream. You can of course add any additional ingredients to flavor it, but for this basic frosting, all you need is the following.

Butter – I use salted butter for my keto frosting recipe. the salt adds a little something extra to the flavour. However, you can use unsalted butter and add a pinch (or more) salt to control the amount of salt in your icing.

Powdered Sweetener – Sukrin Melis is my personal choice of powdered sweetener in this recipe. I find it has little cooling affect and doesn’t affect the flavor of the buttercream. Alternatively, you can make your own powdered sweetener if you cannot source any locally. Jump to the FAQs to see how to make your own powdered keto sweetener at home.

Vanilla Extract – vanilla extract is available in most supermarkets. Alternatively, use the seeds of half of a vanilla bean.

How to Make it

Frosting whipped in a mixer.

Step 1. To make the keto buttercream it is as simple as adding all the ingredients to a mixer or mixing bowl and mixing until the mixture is light and fluffy. I usually mix for 2-3 minutes so that the buttercream is lump-free, smooth, light and fluffy.

Step 2. Scoop the mixture into a piping bag and pipe onto the cake, cupcake or your favorite dessert. Alternatively, the frosting can be simply spread over the top of any cake.

FAQs and Hot Tips

Can I freeze keto buttercream frosting?

You absolutely can! Freeze on its own or on top of any keto cake. I always ensure anything I am freezing is completely airtight to avoid freezer burn. Defrost in the fridge overnight.

Can I use only regular sweetener in keto frosting?

If you do not have powdered sweetener or can source it locally you will need to mill it to make the sweetener finer. If you use a standard sweetener, it will be grainy and not so nice. To mill the sweetener in a Thermomix or similar simply mill 10 sec/speed 10 until a fine powder forms.

How can I make keto dairy free frosting?

The butter can be replaced with a dairy free alternative. Please check the ingredients of the dairy free spread you use as some may have some nasty ingredients.

Can I make it with cream cheese?

You can make the low carb frosting with cream cheese as well as butter. Simple add 100g of cream cheese to this recipe and continue to mix until a smooth and creamy consistency is achieved.

This frosting is simple and delicious! I also use salted butter when making my buttercream because I find the salt helps bring out the flavor of vanilla. So, so good!
