So this Dalgona Coffee craze seems to have ignited over the past week and my feed has been filled with it. So instead of ignoring it, this morning I had to have a go at making a keto Dalgona coffee.

First go and it worked and had stick fluffy coffee in just 1 minute using a hand mixer.

What is Dalgona Coffee

Dalgona Coffee, or whipped coffee seems to have originated in South Korea. Named after Dalgona, honeycomb or sponge toffee, it is very sweet and made with just 3 ingredients.

It super easy to make and could be used in so many ways.

I of course had to make a sugar free Dalgona coffee as I obviously follow the keto diet.

First go with some Sukrin:1 it worked. So then the real testing begun. Could this actually work with espresso coffee, or how about creamers? Let the fun begin!

So there is just 3 ingredients, so let’s keep it simple right. The ingredients are instant coffee, sweetener, and boiling water. Yep it is that easy!

How to make keto whipped coffee (Megan style)

I hope you are ready for this and watch all the steps intently. 😂 This recipe is pretty complex. 😳🤣

  1. Boil some water
  2. Into a small but deep bowl add all 3 ingredients. Stir to combine.
  3. Whip using a hand mixer (so much faster) or whisk until the mixture is thick and fluffy. With my Breville Hand Mixer it took me just 2.5 minutes to achieve a very thick “mousse”.

4. Serve it on a glass of cold Keto Milk and then stir through. Eating it off the spoon is perfectly acceptable too.

Hot Tips and FAQs

  1. Can I use espresso or drip coffee? I tried it with espresso and it was a big fail. Drip coffee I have seen by other bloggers and it seems a lot of fussing around (with filtering) for still a lacklustre result. So use the instant coffee.
  2. What sweeteners can I use? Try any powdered or granulated sweetener that you prefer. I tested several sweeteners and they all pretty much worked fine, but allulose held together the longest.
  3. How long does the keto Dalgona coffee stay fluffy? I find that it does not hold its “thickness” as long as a sugared style would. It is less thick and “meringue-like” than the original. Best to consume at the time of making it.
  4. Can I use a syrup sweetener? I have no idea as I have not tested this. If you try it and it works let me know.
  5. Can I leave out the sweetener? Sadly no. This will not work without it. It is the reaction of all 3 ingredients that makes the Dalgona coffee work.
  6. How else can I use the Dalgona Coffee? I am glad you asked. Serve the foam on top of a keto mug cake, stir through thickened cream or through a keto cheesecake mixture. Alternatively any leftovers can be poured into an ice cube tray and frozen. Use the ice cubes in your next iced coffee.
  7. Can I have this on the Egg Fast Meal Plan? Um Yes you can! Add it into the Salted Caramel Egg Fast Shake (instead of the salted caramel).
  8. Can I make the Dalgona coffee in a Thermomix? Double the recipe and use the butterfly. Mix 3 min/speed 4.

  1. Recipe Notes for Keto Dalgona Coffee:
    • Instant Coffee: Use instant coffee granules to achieve the frothy texture of Dalgona coffee.
    • Allulose, erythritol or Stevia: Choose a keto-friendly sweetener to balance the bitterness of the coffee.
    • Hot Water: Use hot water to dissolve the coffee and sweetener.
    • Unsweetened Keto Milk, Almond milk or Coconut Milk: Opt for a low-carb milk alternative. Try our Peanut Milk or Hemp Milk alternatives.
    • Ice (Optional): Add ice cubes to enjoy Dalgona coffee as an iced beverage.
    • Dalgona coffee is best enjoyed fresh, right after preparing.
    • It’s not recommended to store the frothed coffee mixture, as it may lose its texture and flavor over time.
    • Sweeteners: You can use keto-friendly sweeteners like monk fruit, xylitol, or allulose instead of erythritol or stevia.
    • Milk Alternatives: If almond or coconut milk isn’t suitable, consider using other low-carb options such as macadamia milk, or cashew milk.
    Serving Suggestions:
    • Paired Perfection: Serve your keto Dalgona coffee alongside a slice of keto vanilla cake or a keto cinnamon muffin for a delightful morning treat.
    • Nutty Indulgence: Accompany your coffee with a handful of mixed nuts for a satisfying crunch.
    • Keto-friendly Baked Goods: Enjoy your coffee with a keto cinnamon roll or a slice of keto-friendly banana bread, toasted and spread with butter.
    • Light Snack: Pair your Dalgona coffee with a small serving of cheese cubes or some slices of avocado for a light and savory combination.
As a delightful keto-friendly indulgence, your Dalgona coffee can be enjoyed alongside a range of low-carb treats and snacks to elevate your coffee break experience.

Does the sweetener need to be granular or powdered or does it not matter?

    1. Megan Mad Creations Hub

I dont think it matters but in saying that some sweeteners do not work as well which I outlined in the blog post.

This came out SO well and tasty! On a side note, it works just fine with espresso powder, but don’t make it at 7pm and expect to get any sleep. LOL I also used monk fruit and erythritol for the sweetener. My milk frother worked great for the first half, but then it got too thick, so I had to finish by hand with a whisk. I think this is my new favorite drink!

OMG Megan. This coffee is too good and I am not a coffee girl. Made it today for the second time and I blitzed it for about 8 minutes until it was mousse like texture and then put it in a glass with some almond milk and ice. My daughter is vegan and suggested I add some Turmeric super blend which I did. The result was wonderful if not a bit messy because everything was stained yellow from the Tumeric. Ingredients were Turmeric, Coconut powder, Cinnamon and ground black pepper…Carbs 4.2 so I probaly wont add this reguarly. Thank you again xx

You made my day! I was searching for a keto version of dalgona coffee made without nut milk when I found your recipe. The Keto Milk was perfect for me and the Dalgona Coffee delicious! (I used granular Swerve with great results)

I find this trend fascinating as it did not originate in Korea. We used to do this when I was in boarding school 34 years ago! We had no milk so would do this exact thing by hand. It took ages in our coffee mugs! We would whip a teaspoon of coffee and two teaspoons of sugar with a little hot water until white in colour and with the bubbly texture.

Once frothy and white we would add hot water and drink. It was delisious. and in summer we’d add cold water.

How can something that looks so awesome be made of just 3 ingredients? And look at those nutritional values! Looking forward to giving this a go very soon!

  7. Vicki Swanson

we used to do this about 40 years ago in the office kitchen, the secretaries would all be there mixing sugar with coffee and a little hot water (just with a spoon )
    – make a creamy base then add more hot water and milk if desired – it was a competition to see who could make their boss the creamiest topped coffee – you see it kinda comes out like the “cream” on the top of an expresso or latte – thanks for the modern update

Ok, wow. I normally only drink my coffee black, but I kept seeing these tempting glasses all over the web. Decided to give it a go.

I used Sukrin Gold and a hand blender with the whisk attachment. I don’t think it took a full minute to turn into a firm foam. (I checked the leftovers just now, and after 30 min it’s still firm.) Mixed it with regular milk and it was like a yummy coffee milkshake.

Woohoo! So glad you gave it a whirl Andreas. Like you I am black coffee drinker. But I have to admit I have not tried it with the Sukrin Gold yet so I will do that one next. Thanks for leaving such a great review and taking the time xx
