Why We Love this Recipe

Versatile – our substitute Italian seasoning recipe has so many uses apart from adding it to lasagna or casseroles for a big burst of flavour. You can use it in savoury bakes, mash, sprinkled on chicken or fish, or in keto crackers.

Low carb – This seasoning has 0g net carbs per serve – you can’t get lower than that!

Everyday ingredients – Made with everyday ingredients found in most herb and spice cupboards, and easily sourced from the supermarket.

Quick and easy – just mix it and use as needed.

What is Italian Seasoning Substitute?

Store bought Italian seasoning may contain some nasty fillers and sugar. Our dried Italian seasoning recipe is a homemade blend of aromatic, flavourful herbs and spices that you can customise to your palate. A supermarket-bought blend may not have the punchy flavour you want, and may contain sugar and more salt than necessary to compensate for it.

As both of these additives are not necessary, making an Italian Seasoning Substitute ensures that you have all the flavours you want without the extras you don’t.

You can use this in so many recipes; either to create the flavour in the base of the dish, or for a tasty seasoning. Mixing it with some tomato paste gives you a quick and easy pizza sauce. Adding it to a keto pita bread dough makes a tasty flavoured wrap.

The Ingredients

Scroll to the bottom of this post for the amount of each ingredient needed to make the Italian Seasoning substitutes.

Like I mentioned above, all you need is a handful of pantry ingredients to make a replacement Italian seasoning.

Dried parsley – Found in the seasoning aisle in the supermarket. If you find an old bottle in the pantry check your use-by date first. If the herbs are past their best, they will not have much flavour to add!

Dried basil and oregano – The classic Italian flavours from these two herbs are an essential part of the seasoning.

Marjoram – This herb is a milder relative of oregano, with a slightly different flavour profile. If you are unable to find marjoram in your supermarket, you could substitute it with dried oregano, but only use 2/3 of the amount.

Onion Flakes – these dried, caramelised flakes of onion add a browned-onion flavour. You can use a teaspoon of onion powder in its place, but I much prefer the flavour of the flakes in this recipe.

Garlic granules – using granules in this recipe instead of powder gives you a bit of texture as well as the flavour. You may substitute garlic powder if preferred.

Add extra flavour with salt flakes, black pepper, and red pepper flakes as desired.

How to Make It

Step 1. Measure out all the ingredients into a bowl.

Step 2. Mix them together carefully until well combined!

To make your own seasoning substitute recipe in the Thermomix or Magimix just add all the ingredients at once and mix 5 sec/speed 3. (Make sure the hole in the lid is closed off with the cap!)

Use in sauces, pasta, risottos (even keto risotto), or even as a simple pizza seasoning. Add one tablespoon Italian seasoning into fathead dough when kneading to make an amazing Italian roll or keto pizza.

HOT TIP. While this is a dried seasoning if you love the flavour of fresh herbs add them at the time of cooking with the seasoning. Fresh basil, rosemary or thyme are a perfect companion to the flavours in this seasoning.

Megan’s Tips

How do I store the Italian Seasoning Substitute?

I store the freshly made seasoning in a clean, dry, airtight jar along with the rest of my herbs and spices.

How long does it last?

As long as you’re not using stale dried herbs and spices, this seasoning should keep for up to 3 months in the pantry.

Can I use onion salt and garlic salt as substitutes?

Using onion salt and garlic salt is not recommended as it will add too much salt to the seasoning and overpower the herbs.

I am not a big fan of store-bought seasoning blends as I don’t use them up quickly. I just happened to have all these ingredients except marjoram, but I did have oregano so I made a quick blend for spaghetti sauce.
