If you love a good salad dressing, then this deliciously healthy taco salad dressing recipe is going to be a favourite! With just basic 4 ingredients, it is ready in less than 5 minutes and will jazz up almost any salad recipe!

I am such a fan that I also use it as a sauce for grilled chicken, a good steak and burgers. Mix it up with all your favourite seasonings and make it your own special sauce recipe!

Homemade taco salad dressing allows you to control the flavours better. If you want it spicy or mild, you get to choose.

If you want it to be gluten free, dairy free, keto and low carb friendly, you can make it that way. Making your own allows you to control the ingredients and avoid unnecessary additives, while also keeping it sugar free. Plus, it’s budget friendly and can be whipped up in minutes, which is always a win, right?!

Taco Dressing Ingredients

  • Plain Greek Yogurt/Sour Cream – These ingredients give the dressing a nice tang. I use full fat versions of both, but you can use low fat or dairy free if you need.
  • Chipotles in Adobo Sauce – These add smokiness and heat. If unavailable, smoked paprika or a dash of hot sauce can be used as substitutes.​
  • Fresh Lime Juice – Freshly squeezed is best. Lemon juice can also be a substitute.​
  • Taco Seasoning – Store-bought is convenient, but making your own taco seasoning is so much better!

Best Dressing for Taco Salad Tips

Chill Before Serving: Letting the dressing sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes can add to the flavour.

Balance Flavours: Adjust lime juice and seasoning to suit your taste preferences.​

Consistency Control: If the dressing is too thick, thin it out with a bit of water or additional lime juice.​

How To Make It

Healthy Mexican Salad Dressing in 5 Minutes

Step 1. Place all the ingredients into a bowl, and stir. That is it. Taste and adjust if needed. If you are scared of too much spice, go easy at first and add more of the chipotle and more taco seasoning to your taste.

Thermomix Preparation

For those using a Thermomix, making this dressing is a breeze:​

  1. Place all ingredients into the mixer.; mix for 10 seconds at speed 5.​
  2. If the dressing is too thick, add extra lime juice or water to achieve the desired consistency.

Different Fun Ways To Use It

While taco salad dressing is a staple for taco salads, its versatility doesn’t end there:​

  • Dip for Veggies: Serve it as a dip alongside fresh vegetables, or something yummy like stuffed mushrooms with cream cheese. Add a side of tortilla chips (or keto tortilla chips) for extra dipping!

  • ½ cup Greek yogurt or sour cream
  • 1 tbsp chipotles in adobo sauce
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • 1 tsp Taco Seasoning

Instructions

CONVENTIONAL METHOD

  • Mix all ingredients in a bowl until smooth. I prefer to do this with a blender or food processor. If all you have is a bowl and a whisk it can still be good. If too thick, add extra lime juice or water to thin.

THERMOMIX METHOD

  • Place all ingredients into the mixer; mix 10 sec/speed 5. Scrape and repeat as needed. If too thick, add extra lime juice or water to thin.

    • Greek Yogurt/Sour Cream: For a dairy-free version, substitute with coconut yogurt or a plant-based sour cream alternative.

    • Lime Juice: Lemon juice can be used in place of lime juice. It is not as good (IMO) but the acid balances the dressing.
