Why You SHOULD Make Your Own
Homemade taco salad dressing allows you to control the flavours better. If you want it spicy or mild, you get to choose.
If you want it to be gluten free, dairy free, keto and low carb friendly, you can make it that way. Making your own allows you to control the ingredients and avoid unnecessary additives, while also keeping it sugar free. Plus, it’s budget friendly and can be whipped up in minutes, which is always a win, right?!

Taco Dressing Ingredients
Best Dressing for Taco Salad Tips
Chill Before Serving: Letting the dressing sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes can add to the flavour.
Balance Flavours: Adjust lime juice and seasoning to suit your taste preferences.
Consistency Control: If the dressing is too thick, thin it out with a bit of water or additional lime juice.
How To Make It
Healthy Mexican Salad Dressing in 5 Minutes

Step 1. Place all the ingredients into a bowl, and stir. That is it. Taste and adjust if needed. If you are scared of too much spice, go easy at first and add more of the chipotle and more taco seasoning to your taste.
Thermomix Preparation
For those using a Thermomix, making this dressing is a breeze:
- Place all ingredients into the mixer.; mix for 10 seconds at speed 5.
- If the dressing is too thick, add extra lime juice or water to achieve the desired consistency.

Different Fun Ways To Use It
While taco salad dressing is a staple for taco salads, its versatility doesn’t end there:
- Dip for Veggies: Serve it as a dip alongside fresh vegetables, or something yummy like stuffed mushrooms with cream cheese. Add a side of tortilla chips (or keto tortilla chips) for extra dipping!
- Burrito Sauce: Drizzle it inside burritos or over delicious beef or chicken enchiladas for added creaminess.
- Burger Spread: Use it as a zesty spread on burgers or sandwiches (using our low carb bread recipe).
- Mix the taco sauce with avocado tuna salad or even swap for Caesar Dressing.
- Serve it with all your favourite Mexican dishes. I love it with (keto) Chicken Nachos, Taco Salad with Ground Beef, crispy tacos, or even just with some avocado, Cos/ Romaine lettuce, lean ground beef or any taco meat, plenty of cilantro and a squeeze of lime juice all wrapped into a keto tortilla (or stacked). Sounds epic, doesn’t it?! But, seriously, it is one of those meals that is easy and usually comprises of all the leftovers in the fridge. 😂😂

Variations
- Creamy Avocado Lime Dressing – Blend ripe avocado with lime juice, cilantro, and Greek yogurt for a rich, tangy twist.

Ingredients
- ½ cup Greek yogurt or sour cream
- 1 tbsp chipotles in adobo sauce
- 1 tbsp lime juice
- 1 tsp Taco Seasoning
- Salt flakes and black pepper to taste
Instructions
CONVENTIONAL METHOD
- Mix all ingredients in a bowl until smooth. I prefer to do this with a blender or food processor. If all you have is a bowl and a whisk it can still be good. If too thick, add extra lime juice or water to thin.
THERMOMIX METHOD
- Place all ingredients into the mixer; mix 10 sec/speed 5. Scrape and repeat as needed. If too thick, add extra lime juice or water to thin.
Notes
- Store the dressing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Stir before each use.
-
- Greek Yogurt/Sour Cream: For a dairy-free version, substitute with coconut yogurt or a plant-based sour cream alternative.
- Chipotles in Adobo Sauce: If unavailable, use 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika combined with a pinch of cayenne pepper for heat.
- Lime Juice: Lemon juice can be used in place of lime juice. It is not as good (IMO) but the acid balances the dressing.
-
- Fresh Herbs: Make it deliciously herby with chopped cilantro or parsley.
- Avocado: Everything tastes better with avocado!
-
- Spice Level: Adjust the heat by increasing or decreasing the amount of chipotles in adobo sauce.
- Consistency: If the dressing is too thick, thin it out with a bit of water or additional lime juice to reach your desired consistency.
