What Is Dirty Chai Tea Latte?

A Dirty Chai Latte is a delicious fusion of two beloved beverages: chai tea and espresso. The drink combines the aromatic spices of chai with a bold kick of coffee, creating the perfect combination of flavours. The “dirty” part comes from adding espresso, which adds a rich depth to the spiced tea, making it a perfect pick-me-up.

Why You’ll Love It Dirty

I love this Dirty Chai Latte recipe because it’s the perfect blend of comfort and kick. It’s easy and ready in minutes. The spiced chai adds warmth, while the espresso offers a powerful punch—ideal for any time of the day. It is pretty tasty and I was really surprised just how much I loved it. This recipe is still gluten free, low carb and keto friendly.

The Ingredients

  • Milk: Any milk works, but whole milk or creamy alternatives like pure cream or oat milk provide a richer texture milk froth. For a low-calorie and vegan option, choose unsweetened almond milk, peanut milk, hemp milk, or soy milk. I choose to use homemade keto milk for my chai coffee latte.
  • Espresso/Coffee: If you don’t have espresso, strong brewed coffee is a great substitute. For a more intense flavour, use a dark roast strong coffee.
  • Chai Tea: Loose black tea gives more control over the spice level compared to tea bags. If using loose tea, strain it well to avoid gritty bits. I use Assam tea leaves for a rich robust coffee chai latte.
  • Mad Creations Spice Mix: This blend of chai tea spices can be made ahead of time. It typically includes spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves. You can use store-bought chai spices as well.

How To Make a Dirty Chai Latte

  1. Place 1 cup of water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Add the tea bag (or loose chai tea in a tea infuser), chai spices and sweetener if using. Gently heat the mixture and then steep for about 5 minutes. Remove the tea bag.
  2. Meanwhile, heat milk in a separate pan over medium heat until it’s steaming but not boiling. Froth the milk using a whisk or a milk frother until it’s light and foamy. Alternatively, use a milk frother. Set aside.
  3. Prepare coffee. Pour the hot chai tea mixture into your serving cup, then add the espresso or coffee. Top it off with the frothed milk. Optionally, you can add a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of additional Mad Creations Spice Mix for extra flavour. Enjoy your delicious dirty chai latte!

Variations

The beauty of this keto friendly Dirty Chai Latte lies in its versatility. Here are some delicious variations to try:

  1. Spiced Pumpkin Dirty Chai: Add a spoonful of pumpkin puree and a dash of pumpkin spice for a fall-inspired treat.
  2. Coconut Dirty Chai: Swap regular milk for coconut milk and add a touch of toasted coconut for a tropical twist.
  3. Maple Pecan Dirty Chai: Use sugar free maple syrup and sprinkle some chopped pecans on top for a nutty flavour.
  4. Iced Dirty Chai Latte Coffee: Fill a glass with iced cubes. Pour the cooled chai and espresso mixture over the ice. Add milk or a milk alternative to taste. Stir well to combine.
