What is Cajun Seasoning Substitute

Cajun seasoning is a flavorful seasoning made with chili spices, garlic, and a touch of herbs. Homemade Cajun seasoning is so easy. No nasties, fillers or gluten.

Use as a substitute for store-bought Cajun spice, Old Bay seasoning, or even Creole seasoning.

The Ingredients

Scroll to the bottom of this post for the full list of substitutions for Cajun seasoning ingredients and the amount of each required.

These are the ingredients I use. You can adjust the amounts if you prefer to have yours spicier or less spicy. The choice is yours. You will find this recipe keto-friendly and so much better than any supermarket Cajun spices.

smoked paprika – you can use sweet paprika if you prefer to make sweet Cajun seasoning

salt flakes – I always use sea salt flakes. Do NOT use any salt flakes that have added iodine as it will make the seasoning bitter.

garlic powder – a little goes a long way. Garlic powder is a great addition to any seasoning.

onion powder – onion powder or onion salt can be used.

oregano – dried oregano is best.

Cayenne pepper – this adds a little heat and spice to the Cajun spice. You can substitute ground chili powder if you prefer.

How to Make Homemade Cajun Seasoning

Step 1. Measure out all the ingredients into a bowl.

Step 2. Mix until combined!

Step 3. You can toast the spices once combined or leave until you are going to use them.

To make your own Cajun seasoning in the Thermomix or Magimix add all the ingredients at once and mix 5 sec/speed 3. (Make sure the hole in the lid is closed off with the cap!)

Megan’s Tips

How long will it store for?

You can store this for months in an airtight container in the pantry. I always take notice of the best before dates of the spices I use.

Is Cajun seasoning hot?

Not in my opinion. If you do not like spicy food, you can reduce the amount of cayenne pepper used if preferred.

What can I use to substitute Cajun seasoning?

Other than this Cajun spice alternative you can use Creole Seasoning or Old Bay Seasoning if you prefer.

Ways to Use Cajun Seasoning

I love to sprinkle Cajun spices on everything from steak to fish, vegetables and homemade dressings. Try it with our Smothered Chicken with Onion Gravy, Ranch Dressing (add 1 teaspoon of spice to the dressing), Cajun Blackened Fish or even on the Cote de Boeuf.
