Caprese Salad with Burrata Cheese

Burrata Caprese Salad takes the classic Caprese to a whole new level with the indulgence of creamy burrata cheese. This super-delicious salad combines ripe tomatoes, fragrant basil, and velvety burrata drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It might sound too simple, but trust me, this Caprese salad with burrata is going to be a hit!

Why I Love This Epic Burrata Salad

I absolutely adore Caprese Burrata Salad for its luxurious creaminess and vibrant flavours. It looks incredible on the plate, tastes light and fresh, but is really satisfying as a meal. Plus, it’s incredibly easy to make, perfect for busy days when you want something special without a lot of fuss!

This salad is also gluten free and low carb keto friendly. Burrata is very low in carbs and 15 grams of protein per 100g serve. I love this as a salad to enjoy over the weekend or as an easy side dish.

The ingredients all laid out for a caprese salad with burrata cheese with labels so you know what everything is.

The Ingredients

  • Burrata Cheese – Creamy burrata is the star here, offering a luscious, creamy texture. If you can’t find burrata, a high-quality fresh mozzarella can be used as a substitute, though it won’t be as creamy. Dairy Free Caprese – Use dairy free mozzarella or silken tofu. Flavour well with seasoning, good quality olive oil, and dressing. Using a dairy free cheese alternative will also accommodate any vegans or paleo needs.
  • Heirloom Tomatoes – Use ripe, juicy tomatoes for the best flavour. If you can’t find heirlooms, go for grape or cherry tomatoes, or even a mix of different varieties for added colour and taste. The quality of the tomatoes can make all the difference to your salad. Homegrown is always amazing. If you don’t have homegrown tomatoes make the effort to source some farm fresh or heirloom tomatoes locally.
  • Fresh Basil – Fresh basil is crucial for that aromatic flavour. If you’re out of fresh basil, a small amount of dried basil or other fresh herbs like parsley or oregano can be used, but the taste will differ.
  • Balsamic Vinaigrette – A good quality balsamic vinegar or basil balsamic vinaigrette will add a ton of flavour to the burrata and tomatoes. For a lighter option, try using red wine vinegar or a splash of lemon juice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between burrata and mozzarella? Is burrata keto friendly?

Burrata is a creamier version of mozzarella. It’s made from a mozzarella shell filled with a rich, creamy centre of fresh cream and mozzarella curds. This makes it softer and more indulgent than regular mozzarella.
Yes, burrata is keto-friendly! Burrata is a fresh Italian cheese made from mozzarella and cream, and it’s low in carbs and high in fat, making it a great option for a keto diet. A typical serving of burrata (about 100 grams) contains around 0-1 grams of carbs, making it an excellent choice to add to salads, pair with low-carb vegetables, or enjoy on its own.

Are tomatoes keto friendly?

Tomatoes are relatively low carbs, with about 3-4 grams of net carbs per 100 grams. This makes them a good option for a keto diet when used in moderation.

Can I use other types of tomatoes in this salad?

Absolutely! While heirloom tomatoes are ideal for their flavour and texture, you can use cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, or any ripe, juicy variety you prefer.

How should I store leftovers?

Store any leftover Burrata Caprese Salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It’s best enjoyed within a day or two to keep the burrata fresh and creamy. Avoid storing it too long; tomatoes can release moisture and affect the texture.

Notes

Storage Tips:
Store the burrata in its original liquid in the fridge, tomatoes at room temperature, and basil wrapped in a damp paper towel in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Assemble the salad just before serving for the freshest taste.
Ingredients Tips and Substitutions:
– Burrata cheese is key for its creamy texture, but fresh mozzarella or buffalo mozzarella can be used if needed. Keep an eye out for more burrata recipes. I am obsessed with this creamy Italian cheese.
– Use ripe, firm tomatoes to prevent excess juice. Heirloom or cherry tomatoes add great flavour and colour.
– Fresh basil is essential, but you can substitute with fresh oregano or arugula if basil is unavailable.
– I love a good splash of balsamic vinegar despite a bit of a sugar-hit. You can substitute our Balsamic Basil Vinaigrette if desired.
Alternative Serving Tips:
– For a sweeter twist, substitute some of the tomatoes with slices of peaches, strawberries, or figs.
– Add a mix of herbs like mint, oregano, or arugula for extra flavour.
– Try different dressings like lemon vinaigrette, pesto, or simply season with sea salt and cracked pepper.
Chef’s Tips:
– Use high-quality extra virgin olive oil and balsamic glaze for the best flavour.
– Slice tomatoes just before serving to keep the salad from getting watery.
– Serve with crusty bread or as a side to grilled chicken or fish for a complete meal.
