Green beans ingredients on a grey background.
  • Green Beans – when choosing your beans pick fresh beans that smooth, green and snap easily when you bend them. Avoid beans that are grey, black or brown in colour. You can use frozen green beans if you prefer.
  • This recipe works just the same with French green beans, baby edamame, string beans, wax beans, long beans, Romano beans, purple beans, or snake beans. (So many types of beans).
  • Avocado oil – is a delicious oil that is perfect for baking and air frying. You can use olive oil if you prefer or a light coating of cooking spray.
  • Lemon – lemon juice and zest is the perfect marriage of flavours with green beans.

Chef’s Tips

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Reheat any beans in the microwave or air fryer until warmed through.

Freeze the beans preferably before frying but otherwise, they can be frozen after cooking. To reheat; defrost overnight and gently heat in a pan or microwave.

Substitutes

You can of course, leave out the feta and walnuts. I add them to make this simple side dish into something pretty fancy. You can swap the feta for parmesan, goat cheese or leave out completely for a dairy free vegan green bean recipe.

The walnuts can be left out completely too.

How to Cook Green Beans in an Air Fryer

Easy air fryer vegetable dishes are always a winner and these truly are the best fresh green bean recipe.

Green beans inside an air fryer basket.
  1. Preheat the air fryer to 180°C. Trim the ends of the beans and place them into a large mixing bowl. Add the avocado oil and garlic, toss to combine.
  2. Place into the air fryer basket in a single layer; bake 6-8 minutes shaking the beans halfway through the cooking time. Cook longer if you prefer your beans well cooked.
  3. Divide between serving plates or platter. Drizzle with lemon juice and serve topped with zest, nuts and feta.

COOKS TIP – there are so many ways to serve beans. Serve with any protein of choice. Green beans pair beautifully with chicken, beef, pork, lamb or fish. The Easy Keto Cheese Sauce is a perfect air fryer green beans sauce and also goes great with any protein. Eat them hot or cold, both ways are equally amazing!

Frequently Asked Questions & Air Fryer Tips

Can I air fry green beans without oil?

You sure can. I recommend using a little spray of cooking spray so any seasoning will stick. Either way, they will still cook beautifully.

What model of air fryer is best? Can I use an Instant Pot?

I use the Philips XL Air Fryer but you can use any model you prefer. You can use an instant pot if it is the model with the crisper air fryer lid.

Can I air fry frozen beans or do they have to be fresh green beans in the air fryer?

You can air fry fresh or frozen green beans.

Ingredients

  • 200 g (7 oz) green beans, ends trimmed 7oz
  • 1 tablespoon (1 tablespoon) avocado oil 15g
  • 1 clove (1 clove) garlic finely chopped
  • Zest and juice of half a lemon
  • Salt flakes and black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons (2 tablespoons) crushed walnuts, or nuts of choice 10g
  • ¼ cup (0.25 cup) crumbled feta 30g

Instructions

AIR FRYER GREEN BEANS

  • Preheat the air fryer to 180°C. Trim the ends of the beans and place them into a large mixing bowl. Add the avocado oil and garlic, toss to combine.
  • Place into the air fryer basket in a single layer; bake 6-8 minutes shaking the beans halfway through the cooking time. Cook longer if you prefer your beans well cooked.
  • Divide between serving plates or platter. Drizzle with lemon juice and serve topped with zest, nuts and feta.

STOVETOP METHOD GREEN BEANS

  • Bring a saucepan of water to a boil. Add the beans to the boiling water and cook for 1-3 minutes (as you prefer). Strain and plunge them into ice-cold water to stop them from overcooking and keep them nice and bright green. Drain and pat dry with paper towel.
  • Add the avocado oil, garlic, lemon juice, and zest to the saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the beans to the oil; season to taste and toss to coat. Remove from the heat. Divide between serving plates or platter and serve topped with nuts and feta.

THERMAL METHOD GREEN BEANS

  • Pour 500g of water into the mixer. Place the green beans into the steamer dish and lock into place; steam 6-10 min/120°C/speed 1 until the beans are cooked to your liking. Transfer to a colander and cover in ice to stop the beans from overcooking.
  • Add the avocado oil, garlic, lemon juice, and zest to the saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the beans to the oil; season to taste and toss to coat. Remove from the heat. Divide between serving plates or platter and serve topped with nuts and feta.

Notes

AIR FRYER TIPS
Always check the manufactures instructions on operating your model of air fryer.
Do not place the air fryer on any wood cutting boards or anything flammable.
Preheat for 3-5 minutes to heat the element for even cooking.
Do not use aerosols for greasing the basket. I prefer to oil the foods, but otherwise use a little olive or avocado oil in the basket.
BLANCHING
Blanch the beans in boiling water, steam or pan-fry; the choice is yours. Using an ice bath retards the cooking process and keeps the beans bright in colour and al dente. They are just as delicious cold as they are warm.
STORAGE
Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days.
REHEATING
Reheat any beans in the microwave or air fryer until warmed through.
FREEZING GREEN BEANS
Freeze the beans preferably before frying but otherwise, they can be frozen after cooking. To reheat; defrost overnight and gently heat in a pan or microwave.
