Key Ingredients
Keep reading for more details on the ingredients, substitutes and instructions on how to make the best fresh green beans recipe.
- Green Beans – when choosing your beans, pick fresh beans that are smooth, green and snap easily when you bend them. Avoid beans that are grey, black or brown in colour. You can use frozen green beans if you prefer.
- This recipe works just the same with French green beans, baby edamame, string beans, wax beans, long beans, Romano beans, purple beans, or snake beans. (So many types of beans).
- Avocado oil – is a delicious oil that is perfect for baking and air frying. You can use olive oil if you prefer or a light coating of cooking spray.
- Lemon – lemon juice and zest is the perfect marriage of flavours with green beans.
Chef’s Tips
Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Reheat any beans in the microwave or air fryer until warmed through.
Freeze the beans preferably before frying but otherwise, they can be frozen after cooking. To reheat; defrost overnight and gently heat in a pan or microwave.
Substitutes
You can, of course, leave out the feta and walnuts. I add them to make this simple side dish into something pretty fancy. Swap the feta for parmesan or goat cheese, or leave it out completely for a dairy-free vegan green bean recipe. The walnuts can be left out completely too.

COOKS TIP – there are so many ways to serve beans. Serve with any protein of choice. Or mix it with a combination of air fryer sides like Air Fryer Cauliflower with Lemon and Cumin or Air Fryer Tofu Fries. If you don’t have an air fryer, try sauteed green beans or baked in the oven.
Beans pair beautifully with chicken, beef, pork, lamb or fish. The Easy Keto Cheese Sauce is a perfect sauce to pair with the beans. Eat them hot or cold, both ways are equally amazing!
